As early adopters of the web, we have actively promoted its use for growth and empowerment; for the individual, for small businesses and institutions. For a dark period in the early noughties, there was a danger that the corporate web would swamp individual users and innovators. The actions of giant media and telco interests attempting to create a two-tier internet have presented signicant barriers.

But the pioneering spirit of the web prevailed, and tools such as blogs, wikis, media sharing, microformats and social networks have brought about a true democratisation of the web. The user-generated web has become an unstoppable force.

The spread of affordable broadband and wifi networks fuels growth of the user web. There are also the hidden heroes - the countless thousands of dedicated innovators who contribute their time to open source software projects. More than half of internet content is now served by Apache open source servers, ensuring that the user web can not be outpriced or controlled by large corporations.
